Mick May: In 2008 Mick turned 50. He began surfing at age 8 usually holidaying at Sth Durras NSW. His family lived in Canberra but they loved to escape every other weekend to the ocean. The other weekends they were either attending church or being of service. He finished school & did an apprenticeship in plumbing, draining & gasfitting, completing his licences 6 years later. He then left & traveled for a year up the east coast as far as Cooktown doing a variety of jobs. After experiencing many places he still preferred what Durras had to offer so he returned south to set up a plumbing business supplemented with residential tree lopping. It was then that he got serious with God & gave his life fully to Jesus. He later meet a wonderful woman, my his wife Liz. He initially, & then Liz got involved with Fusion Aust., then Young Life Aust. Mick is currently teaching scripture at Batemans Bay High School, and along with his wife Liz and son Luke attends the Anglican Church in Batemans Bay, where they are an intricate part of the youth work program and fellowship. When asked why he still works with youth he said, " I love to work with the youth because of their vitality & open minds". |

Mal MacCallum: Mal MacCallum has been surfing since he was 12 years old. His first board resembled an ironing board more than what it was meant to be, but as for so many it didn’t matter what you started on you get the surfing bug very quickly. Mal grew up at Port Kembla a little south of Wollongong and surfed most days of his adolescence. As a goofy footer the reef at Port Kembla, a 200 to 400 metre long left-hander was a great place to develop surfing skills. That was a long time ago, in the 1970’s but now thirty years later Mal still loves to get out amongst the waves, particularly at South Broulee and Point North East/Potholes at Burrill Pines. Mal became a Christian in his late adolescence and still vividly recalls the amazing change of attitude and outlook meeting Christ brought into his life and continues to do so. He recommends the change to everyone. Mal is married to Ros and they have three kids, Meg, Tom and Annie. They attend Batemans Bay Anglican Church.Mal a former teacher and school principal is currently the CEO of the Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council. Batemans Bay Christian Surfers gives Mal plenty of water time and he loves seeing the local grommets enjoying the surf in such a wholesome group. |
